“Do you want to go to dinner with me sometime?”  Enjolras asks him, and Grantaire closes his eyes against the sudden mess of emotion that runs through him.

How does he tell Enjolras, who only shows interest now that Grantaire is sober, that he would have relapsed a thousand times if not for Combeferre, that he owes Combeferre his life, that he’s already given to Combeferre what he once offered freely to Enjolras, that Enjolras has no right to cause chaos where Grantaire’s finally created peace?

“I don’t think so,” Grantaire replies softly, and it hurts – years of yearning are not denied so easily – but it’s also freeing, to finally be able to say no to him, and Grantaire thinks he’s learned how to make the right decision at last.
